THEATRE TRIP

“KISS ME KATE”

Sheffield Crucible Theatre has just announced its Christmas spectacular.

Lavish costumes, sensational dance routines, and Cole Porter’s music including Brush Up Your Shakespeare, It’s Too Darn Hot, So In Love, Wunderbar, Always True To You In My Fashion, From This Moment On, plus loads more, all guarantee a show that will be high in the reputation of this theatre.

At this venue we have seen great productions of My Fair Lady, Me And My Girl, Annie Get Your Gun, Showboat, Anything Goes, all superbly presented, so Kiss Me Kate from the Golden Age, is a riotous, romantic musical comedy to make your heart soar.

It’s opening night for feuding divorcees Fred and Lilli as they star in The Taming Of The Shrew. But as the curtain rises, gambling, gangsters and mistaken identity conspire to create chaos.

The story involves the production of a musical version of Shakespeare’s play and the conflict on and off-stage between Fred Graham, the show’s director, producer, and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi.

A secondary romance concerns Lois Lane, the actress playing Bianca, and her gambler boyfriend, Bill, who runs foul of some gangsters.

Kiss Me Kate was Cole Porter’s response to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, and was the first show he wrote in which the music and lyrics were firmly connected to the script, and it proved to be his biggest hit and the only one of his shows to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway.

The original London West End production opened in 1951 and has won lots of Tony and Olivier awards from Best Actress to best costume.

Excellent seats are guaranteed in this perfect all-round view theatre to ensure good views of the action where ever one sits, and a very generous group discount, full price seats of £40 gaining a 20% reduction bringing the cost of a ticket down to £32.
