Cabaret
Grand Theatre, Leeds
5th January 2020

What good is sitting, alone in your room,

Come hear the music play,

Life is a cabaret, old chum,

Come and see ‘Cabaret’.

This wonderful musical’s opening song, featuring Sally Bowles, as she performs in a decadent Berlin between the war years, the emerging Nazi regime, featuring all the great songs from the show with choreography by Bob Fosse, all these elements encompass a great musical score, featuring songs Wilkommen, sung by the Emcee, Don’t Tell Mama, the lovely very risqué and cheeky, Two Ladies, Tomorrow Belongs to Me, Money Makes the World Go Around,  and of course the title song, Cabaret, plus loads more.

Based on a short story by Christopher Isherwood, it features the low life in Berlin in 1931 as the Nazi influence and power starts to take over, focusing on the night life at the seedy Kit Kat club, revolving around the American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, and his relationship with the English cabaret performer, Sally Bowles.

A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between the German boarding house owner, Fraulein Schneider, and her elderly suitor, Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor, a most moving song, ‘If You Could See Her’.

Over-seeing all the on stage action is the Emcee of the club.

Starring in this role is John Partridge, who played EastEnders charismatic Christian Clarke, Kara Lily Hayworth is Sally Bowles, and Fraulein Schneider is played by Anita Harris
